In this edition of Lucid Insights, we’ll be looking at 3 strategies you can use to grow a bigger and better audience for the long haul. Let’s dive in!
Your Audience is the Lifeblood of Your Business
Over time, using the many available tools to build a loyal following is more important than ever.
It should be obvious that these tools have never been more accessible. (We’re talking about social media of course.)
While accessibility is excellent for providing more opportunities, you still have to overcome the fact that social media is a very crowded space.
To rise above, you will have to tap into your creativity and maintain consistency.
Audience building is a long-term investment, so the sooner you implement these 3 strategies, the sooner you will reap the rewards.
1. Be Recognizable
Understand this. People like it when things are familiar.
Let’s consider the TV sitcom Friends. You may have heard of it.
The pilot episode for Friends aired on September 22, 1994. That episode marked the beginning of a 10-year, 10-season (236 episodes) run of what would be one of the most-watched shows of all time.
Millions of people would tune in every week to see what the gang was up to and to this day, almost 20 years after the series finale, the show maintains a cult following.
So how does a sitcom from the 90s become this popular?
By being recognizable.
People are drawn to predictable outcomes. It’s in our nature.
Friends created familiar characters that people could relate to.
Every episode delivered a predictable outcome using familiar characters. And people just couldn’t get enough.

2. Stand Out From the Crowd
Becoming recognizable is just the start.
Why should someone choose to follow you in the first place? Because you’re unique.
Again, social media is a crowded place. Being recognizable in a unique way is your best shot a getting noticed.
Get them to think: How do your unique experiences offer a fresh perspective? Do you believe something that others don’t?
Challenge their beliefs: How do you provide information that will stop the reader from scrolling by? Will you be able to make them question what they previously believed or thought possible?
Now, you don’t want to challenge them so hard that you push them away…
The idea is to put a new spin on things so that the audience you build are those who think, feel, and align with the core values of your business.
3. Lastly, Be Consistent. Give it Time.
Everyone wants to grow their business as quickly as possible.
But there is true value in building your empire over time.
While the way to the top can feel like a long, grueling crawl to get to where you want to be, it’s also where you discover what you do best.
Here is a short interview with Chris Do where he talks about audience and brand building. This conversation is focused more on building a personal brand but the principles can be applied to building a brand around a product or service.
At one point in the interview, Chris speaks on something that you don’t want to have happen. And it may surprise you.
He speaks about several people he knows that grew too quickly.
These people were lucky enough to crack the viral code early in their online journey.
Now you’re probably thinking that going viral and obtaining a lot of followers early on is a good thing. Right?
Well, think of it like this…
Growing too fast means you haven’t had time to find your voice. Your early adopters are following you because of one or two pieces of content and now they associate you with those ideologies.
Any changes or pivots are now going to alienate those people.
The benefit of growing over time is that you have been given the opportunity to craft your message and sharpen your delivery with laser-like precision.
So give yourself the chance to develop into the powerhouse you are!
Summary
Growing an audience is not an easy endeavor. But, when done correctly, you will have built a business on top of a strong foundation that receives ongoing support.
Figure out what you want to be recognized for and do it in a unique way.
What should someone associate your brand with? How can you make your product or service synonymous with your core values?
If you can stay committed to those two things by consistently creating quality content over time, the results will come.
